D&D / Drink & Dial - If the Walls could Talk!

I think I’ve had this phone for about 12 years. This was the phone I made those very important calls on back in the 90’s. You know the “Hey, what’s up?, what’s shakin’ ?” type calls. I’m sure this phone has heard things that would make most blush, cry, laugh, feel angry &/or happy, stunned and maybe run for help. So I have made it a point to carry it with me from new home to new home. Almost after every move it hasn’t seen the unpacking phase. It’s like the Christmas ornament you hate to throw out because you will be sad next year if its not with you for the holiday. It’s a family member. (ya, I know it’s weird)

After all, this phone has heard personal intimate details of my life. Who knows how easily it would crack under certain interrogative tactics if it fell into the wrong hands.

So about a year ago I caught the phone staring at me (about 2:00 a.m. with blood shot eyes) while I was taking a break from working and thought I should do something nice for this friend of mine. So I became obsessed with thinking of ideas about how I was going to show this phone its potential.

About two weeks later I visited my friend Darren in St. Louis who builds motorcycles. When it comes to costumizing, Darren throws it down hardcore! He has this extraordinary skill with an airbrush (pen, pencil, marker, brush, crayon, etc…) and brings this skill to building bikes & custom paint.

It felt a little weird to explain my idea to him. Darren didn’t flinch (probably rolled his eyes) when I finished talking to myself. Without hesitation Darren agreed to trick it out. When Darren left he was one 1980’s beige AT&T phone heavier. The only thing he asked was: What’s your favorite color?

Some time went by and the phone was out of sight out of mind.  About 3 months later I had to roll through St. Louis and was presented with a surprise. My jaw about hit the ground when I saw the makeover. The super glossy metallic sparkle with the wicked pin stripe running around it blew me away. I couldn’t believe that this was the same phone that he left with.

The pictures don’t really do it justice, but I wanted to share.

I have a lot of cool gadgets but this is one of my old school favorites.

Giving something old a new life is pretty F@#$ing cool.
